FLASH POEMS

These are all SNIPPETS – not bits of poems, but poems that are bits in themselves. A sort of poetic equivalent of flash fiction, if you like; examples of the attempt to fit an entire thought into a very short poem.

CALAMITY
What is this emptiness I feel?
My heart is split and will not heal.
I am bereft and all alone-
I have mislaid my mobile phone!

DEFINITION OF A POEM
A sudden vortex
in the cerebral cortex,
cutting a temporary caper
on paper.

BOMBSHELL
“I have a confession to make”, he said
“I hope it won’t ruin your life.
I’ve plucked up the courage to leave you at last,
and I’m going back home to my wife.”

MOMENT OF TRUTH
Yes, my beloved,
you are right, as always –
your bum does indeed
look big in that.

DUET
We are not often noted
for our harmony,
but boy, do we do counterpoint.

CREATIVITY
I wrote a poem on the train –
they made me wash it off again!

FOOTNOTE
‘I try to keep up with fashion’, she said
‘but it causes me endless woes –
there’s no room, in a shoe by Jimmy Choo,
for a bunion and hammer toes!’
